In past winters, when we'd drive into Ukiah from San Francisco and go past Oak Valley Nursery, for reasons never entirely clear Stu would chortle over their "Bare root season!" sandwich board.
And I'd reassure him that once we moved up, we would certainly do something about it.
The time is now. I made a list of the types of things we'd like: a couple of very fragrant roses; a couple of blueberries that can be put in our half wine barrels; old fashioned lilacs (in half wine barrels if possible to help keep them short and keep us from having to deal with our clay soil issue); maybe a redbud for the upper yard to replace one of the apple trees that was removed five years ago (this may wait until next year).
John, the very knowledgeable and friendly owner of Oak Valley, basically said "yep, we'll have those" to everything. No need for special ordering. Prices well under $20 per plant. He took our phone number so he can call us as soon as the stock is delivered.
His best guess is around January 15. So it looks like I'll spend the long holiday weekend of my birthday digging and potting.
